Healthcare workers have recognised that all implantable devices suffer from the common problem of device related infections, which invariably lead to morbidity and in some instances, mortality. This severe problem has a devastating impact on the healthcare system. BioInteractions are combating device related infections by the application of their novel Surface Active Antimicrobial Coating, Avert™.
Avert™ is the only anti-microbial coating to combine a non-thrombogenic component with an anti-microbial component and offers the best in technical achievement and technological advancement. The unique polymer formulation of Avert™ is biocompatible, lubricious and anti-microbial.
Avert™ inhibits protein deposition and bacterial adhesion, thereby preventing biofilm formation. The active component is co-polymerised with a non-thrombogenic functionality and a stabilising monomer to provide a stable, non-leaching coating assembly, which displays a contact-kill mechanism for anti-microbial activity. The coating has demonstrated long-term protection against infection and displays a broad spectrum of activity against a variety of bacterial strains, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
*Avert™ is currently licensed to B.Braun for its central venous catheter for long-term protection against infection, delivering maximum safety to the patient.
